Leeds City of Sanctuary is part of a movement of local people who want our city to be a welcoming place for people seeking sanctuary from war or persecution. It is part of a national network of Cities of Sanctuary around the UK, which began in Sheffield in 2005.
For many years Leeds has offered a home to people whose lives were in danger in their own countries. Many have lost their homes and families, but they have brought new skills, music, food and hard work to build up our city.
City of Sanctuary was launched in Leeds in 2010, and since then we have seen many people and all sorts of groups join in to declare they want their place of worship, school or business to be a place of sanctuary.
