World Homeless Week is the week in which we celebrate World Homeless Day each year. It’s not an official celebration - but for The Crypt, it most definitely is!
World Homeless Day, celebrated on October 10th, is the international day that serves as a platform to celebrate good works, benchmark progress, advocate for improved policies and funding that can help prevent and end homelessness. It aims to raise awareness about the needs of people who currently experience homelessness and promote work in local communities to alleviate suffering and prevent death.
For us, we use the week to educate and reach people online that are not familiar with the work we do. What’s more, this year our Retail Department is putting on a series of fundraising opportunities for our charity shop supporters! Our shops are based in Armley, Roundhay, Morley and Pudsey and to celebrate World Homeless Day, this week our shops are hosting clothing and food drives, tombolas and more…
Our Upcoming Activities:
- 6th October - Tombola at Morley
- 7th October - Tombola and Hot Drinks at Pudsey
- 8th October - Tombola at Roundhay
- 9th October - Tombola and Hot Drinks at Armley
- 10th October - Tombola at St. John’s Centre
If you are in and around Leeds City Centre or near any one of our charity shops, pop in and see what you can win!
Where Did World Homeless Day Start?
The concept of ‘World Homeless Day’ emerged from online discussions between people working to respond to homelessness from various parts of the world. The Inaugural day was marked on the 10th of October 2010, which makes 2026 celebrations, the 17th annual World Homeless Day. Since its founding, it has been observed on every continent (except Antarctica), in over 100 countries.
How Can You Help?
The main aim of World Homeless Day is to raise awareness about homelessness in your local area. We have lots of openings for volunteering at our charity shops, as well as event tickets, and donations of all kinds. If you would like to see all of our opportunities or donate, please click the link here. Your donations are what drive us to have the facilities that we need to continue to provide the essential services that we do. Food, clothing and money is all essential - especially as we start to head into winter.
