Dozens of people turned up and enjoyed free ice creams, genuine home made orange juice and other culinary delights last Saturday afternoon at Leeds City Mission (LCM).

They were visiting the Leeds City Mission’s Summer Praise Open Afternoon.  As the sun shone through the clouds visitors were treated to a light lunch and a range of other refreshments.  Some sat outside around tables on the adjoining grassed area under the shade of leafy trees.  Others mingled inside the City Mission Hub.

City Mission staff and volunteers organised a Praise Interlude plus a short update about on-going City Mission work.  The LCM Prison Chaplain accompanied on the guitar a song written by some of the prisoners who attend chapel services in jail.  This reminded those attending of the vital work being undertaken by those serving sentences and also the ex-offenders they meet through their projects throughout the week.   These projects include a Foodbank, Christian Book & Card Booth, Charity Shop, Rough Sleepers Shower, Hygiene Shelf and a Clothing Bank.  Five part time staff are employed and they are supported by over 20 volunteers in the various projects of the City Mission.

After the Praise Interlude many took the opportunity to browse some of the displays inside the City Mission Hub.  They were also treated to free ice creams and genuine home made orange juice.

Coordinator Andy Dalton concluded “This was a great day with many supporters from churches around the city turning up.  It provided an excellent opportunity to bring believing people up to date with the latest news of LCM projects”

Leeds City Mission has a specific focus on ministry to the marginalised as well as supporting churches in their own witness in their respective neighbourhoods of the metropolis.  This includes work amongst the homeless, prisoners, ex offenders, unemployed, addicts, those suffering from mental health and people who are just struggling with life.  It is a multi-church Christian agency which has brought gospel hope and practical help to marginalised people since 1837.  It is located in Mistress Lane at the end of the Armley shopping area just 300 yards from the front doors of Armley Jail.
