Have you ever been boxed into a corner and felt the only way out of the situation is not to tell the truth? I have.
Before I had a change in my Christian lifestyle, I had the tendency to categorize lies into good and bad lies. However, any kind of lie is wrong, and it only gives satan the opportunity to rubbish our testimony.
We are reminded in God’s Word not to lie to each other, since we have taken off our old self with its practices (Colossians 3:9). To avoid condemnation from satan and win victory over sin, we must:
- Have an appetite for the truth – The only place we can get the truth is in the Bible. Seek out examples of Bible characters who did not live in truth and had to deal with the consequences. We should learn from their mistakes.
- Pray – We are to daily pray that the Holy Spirit will empower us to stand firm against the schemes and techniques of the devil and lying is certainly one of them.
- Be intentional about walking in truth – Personally, when I am faced with a business or personal situation where I forgot to honor my commitment, feeling the need to lie to avoid hurting people’s feelings, I intentionally (by the power of the Holy Spirit) chose to be truthful and apologize rather than sinning against God. This requires prayer and practice.
- Repent – When we fail, and believe me, we will fail because we are humans, let’s quickly repent and ask for God’s forgiveness and mercy. The Bible reminds us in 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness”.
Christ follower, may the Lord help us to stand against anything in our lives that will cause others to stumble In Jesus Name. Amen. If you are currently not a Christ follower, Jesus is the way the truth and the life – so come!
All glory to God!
