Leeds City Mission (LCM) is offering practical help to young families.

LCM has acquired a batch of good, clean second hand school uniforms originating from primary schools in the West Leeds area.  They are being distributed free of charge to families with children who need clothes to begin the new school year in September.

LCM Hub Manager Sinclair Martin explained that local primary schools had donated their lost property which included many clothing items.  The school clothes have been washed and ironed.  They include dresses, skirts, trousers, sweatshirts, blouses, T-shirts and shorts.   

He recounted that parents were turning up at the City Mission in Mistress Lane, Armley and were choosing items appropriate for their children.  The clothes are being offered free of charge.

Sinclair Martin said that this project was designed to help families whose budgets are under pressure.  It also meant that good quality clothes would find a new lease of life thus reducing waste. 

He concluded “Leeds City Mission is seeking to help and support families on the margins who are facing challenges and difficulties.  In today’s world of rising prices and restricted budgets the advent of the new school year means even more expense.  Parents are being helped to save precious money by accessing these clothes for their children.  This project is an expression of practical Christian compassion for those in need”

The City Mission is located at the junction of Town Street and Mistress Lane (next door to Westerly Rise flats) in Armley.  It is diagonally opposite Armley Library.  It is the last public building in the Armley shopping area.  It is open Monday – Friday 10.00 am – 3.00 pm.  Parents are visiting the City and collecting clothing items displayed on tables in the Centre before the return to school next week.

Leeds City Mission is a multi-church Christian agency.  It works to support Leeds churches as well as reaching out to marginalised people.  Over three centuries it has sought to meet the physical, social and spiritual needs of Leeds residents.  It is one of the city’s oldest Christian charities, being in continuous existence since 1837.
