Leeds Minster is pleased to announce that we are a Pilgrim Place, as part of Faith in the North’s initiative encouraging everyone to visit historic sites of worship in the North of England.

Being named a Pilgrim Place recognises our unique heritage as a site of Christian worship in Leeds since the 10th century. Visitors are encouraged to take a moment out of the fast-paced life of the city and spend time in quiet reflection, reconnecting with a sense of perspective and peace.

Faith in the North’s Pilgrim Place scheme is designed to help everyone discover these special buildings or destinations, whether you have a faith already or you’re visiting for the first time.

“Visiting a Pilgrim Place doesn’t mean you have to be wearing hiking boots or a rucksack… Instead, it means that like millions of people before you, you can find peace, hope, comfort, and understanding to take back into your everyday pilgrim journey of life.”

If you’d like to know more about the history of our building, and what you can explore when you arrive at this Pilgrim Place, here’s five things you should see on your visit.

During the season of Lent, we remember Jesus wandering in the wilderness to prepare for his ministry. Christians are encouraged to break out of normal habits and routines, to make more space for reflection, and recognise our reliance on God’s love. Visiting a pilgrim place may be a way for you to mark this season, and reconnect with this ancient faith in new ways.

Find a ‘Pilgrim Place’ leaflet inside the Minster, to help you reflect on themes of journeying, prayer, and the heritage of the English saints as you move through the building. You can speak to one of our volunteer welcomers to find out more, and stop for a cup of tea in the City of Leeds Room while you’re here.

We hope you will make a pilgrimage to us very soon, and find peace and courage for the next step of your journey.
