Leeds City Mission are offering a check up to anyone who would like a free blood pressure test

Blood pressure tests will be available next Monday and Tuesday mornings 10.00 – 1.00 pm (16/17 February) at the Leeds City Mission Compassion Centre, Mistress Lane, Armley, LS12 2LJ

Anyone can call in without appointment to have their blood pressure checked without charge.

High or low blood pressure can be serious for all ages.

The chance of having high blood pressure increases as people get older.  This is due to structural changes in the body’s blood vessels or vascular system. Arteries get stiffer, which causes blood pressure to rise.  High blood pressure is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease, especially heart attacks and strokes.

The City Mission has partnered with the Leeds Blood Pressure-Wise Project which is funded by Leeds City Council’s Public Health Department.  The City Mission runs a variety of initiatives including a Welcome Space, Foodbank, Clothing Bank and other projects.  In addition to their evangelism and social outreach endeavours in the city they also seek to promote good health and well-being.

People only need a few spare minutes to undertake the test.  Believing people and the general public are invited to call in at their Compassion Centre and have their blood pressure checked.

For some it can be a life saving decision.  One in three adults in the UK has high blood pressure and it usually has no symptoms.  One in nine people don’t know they have it. A high blood pressure reading should always be taken seriously.  High blood pressure is known as the ‘silent killer’.

City Mission Compassion Centre Manager Sinclair Martin said that professional health staff will be conducting the blood pressure checks. These two sessions fitted well with the Mission’s ethos of bringing gospel hope and good health to people.

There will also be opportunity to browse around the adjacent City Mission Charity Shop and its Christian Book & Card Booth.  Free refreshments are also on offer

The City Mission Compassion Centre is located at the junction of Town Street and Mistress Lane (next door to Westerly Rise flats) in Armley.  It is diagonally opposite Armley Library.  It is the last public building in the Armley shopping area.  Telephone 0113 345 3118 or e-mail lcm1837@gmail for more details.  There is free on-street parking and buses 15, 16, 16a, 81,86,87, 14, 72, X6, X11 all stop within a less than two minute walk of the City Mission premises.

Leeds City Mission is a multi-church Christian agency.  It works to support Leeds churches as well as reaching out to marginalised people.  Over three centuries it has sought to meet the physical, social and spiritual needs of Leeds residents.  It is one of the city’s oldest Christian charities, being in continuous existence since 1837.
