Families claiming benefits who have had a third or subsequent child after April 2017 are denied up to £3,235 per year per child compared with families whose kids were all born before that date.

Around 1.5 million children across the UK are impacted by the policy – that is one in 10 children. Leading charities believe it is one of the key drivers of child poverty.

In the North West and Yorkshire and Humber, around 13% are impacted by the policy. It is 12% in the North East. These areas are among the worst for child poverty rates across the UK. In comparison, the least affected region is the South East at 8%, but that still amounts to 160,000 children who are granted less financial support than their peers because they have two or more siblings.
