Ekphrasis means 'description' in Greek. An ekphrastic poem is a vivid description of a scene or, more commonly, a work of art. The imaginative act of narrating and reflecting on the 'action' of a painting or sculpture, the poet may amplify and expand its meaning.

Come along to this interactive creative writing workshop at Leeds Art Gallery and learn more about Ekphrastic writing; the practice of creative writing from visual art.
No experience in poetry or fine art is required, just an interest in how creative writing can be used to explore new ideas and to express some of the hardest to talk about social injustices facing our city.
Amanda Philips, Learning and Access Officer at the Leeds Art Gallery, and Dr Edwin Stockdale, poet and Creative Writing lecturer at Leeds Trinity University, invite you to explore the artwork on display through creative writing.
The exhibition we will explore is To Improvise a Mountain by Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. One of the most important figurative painters today, Lynette selects an exhibition of works critical to her way of seeing and thinking, inviting audiences on a personal journey through art past and present.
At this interactive day workshop, reflections will also be provided from Bronagh Daly, Art Theologian, on the theme of ‘Wisdom: Rooted in Place’.
