I have heard it said that a good foundation for marriage is one that is all about continually choosing the other person. It’s not just a one time choice on your wedding day, but it’s a daily choice made from a place of love for the other person.

Now, this blog is not about marriage, but this principle made me think about our relationship with Jesus. He chooses us, and we also choose Him every day.

Choosing Jesus daily is a package deal though. When we choose Him, we choose everything that comes with a relationship with Him.

Jesus said: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.’ (Luke 9:23)

When we choose Jesus, we are also choosing obedience to Him. It means we are set apart from the world, will have to do things differently from those around us and will face persecution. But, it is all more than worth it because of the person of Jesus.

Recently, I stuck the words “I Choose You” on my wall. It has been a good reminder to me every morning that I am intentionally choosing Jesus and walking on the narrow path with Him. With joy and with love, I know who and what I am choosing.

In all of this though, God chose us first and already gave us this free gift of grace! It is somewhat a mystery that can’t fully be understood, but a glorious one to ponder.

‘For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.’ (Ephesians 1:4)

We are caught up in this big-picture, eternal story of God. What a joy!

Particularly at this Halloween time, let’s be careful that we are choosing Jesus and everything that comes with a relationship with Him. Have a chat with Him about what that looks like.
