Holy Spirit is your best teacher.
‘For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.’ (Ephesians 2:10) All people are God’s handiwork. Having been carefully hand-crafted, we are all different, and all individually planned and known by God because he took the time to make us.
Because we are all different, Holy Spirit is our best teacher. As a person of God living in us, He knows us better than anyone. Imagine a classroom full of students. Each student is individual and learns in a different way, but the teacher delivers a lesson based on what is best for the class as a whole. Then imagine a personal tutor in a one-to-one session. The tutor is able to tailor their lesson to suit the individual needs of the student. Both ways of learning are good, but the one-to-one session is more personal.
I like listening to different people teach the Bible, and God has spoken to me immensely through the teachings of others. However, I found myself getting to a place where I was relying on others to hear the voice of God. It also led to some unhealthy comparisons to people who are at a different point in their journey to me. All the while, I had a one-to-one tutor, the Holy Spirit, who was ready to teach me, strengthen me, guide me and chat with me, but I was settling with a second-hand message!
It can seem challenging or complicated to hear the voice of God, but remember that as God’s handiwork, you are hardwired to hear His voice. You are fully known by Him, so he knows how to best communicate with you. He will guide you through the Bible. I love the description of Holy Spirit in the Amplified Bible: ‘But the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor – Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things.’ (John 14:25)
So please do learn from great teachers, but don’t forget to listen to your best teacher, Holy Spirit!
