I’m a big musical theatre buff. I know some of you will be tempted to stop reading now, but I urge you to stick with me! I recently heard something about the musical Hamilton, up there in my top 5 favourites. I’m not sure if its totally true but it prompted me to think and I thought I’d share it with you.

In the musical there is a scene where two of the main characters, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr sing a song called ‘Dear Theodosia’. In the play the song is about them welcoming their respective children, Theodosia and Phillip into the world and vowing to make the world a better place for them. While its not one of the biggest numbers in the show there is a quiet emotion to it that is striking to watch. Apparently Leslie Odom Jr who plays Aaron Burr, said that he used singing that song, on a broadway stage every day, as a chance to pray for his actual daughter. He used the words of the song;

We'll make it right for you

If we lay a strong enough foundation

We'll pass it on to you, we'll give the world to you

And you'll blow us all away

Someday, someday

Yeah, you'll blow us all away

Someday, someday

To sing the sentiments over his daughter. But also there are periods of time where he sits still on the stage while Hamilton sings his parts, and during those moments too he would pray for his young daughter.

It got me thinking about the moments of my day or week, that repeat each week where I could commit to praying for something or someone. Perhaps when I’m commuting, or tidying up after dinner or on the school run. Its been so good to recognise moments in my day and build a habit of prayer.

Our church recently started something in a specific area of the city. I regularly drive through this area and now whenever I do, when I’m not answering a million questions my kids have, I pray for that ministry and the people involved. Its a small habit that I believe will make a difference.

Is there a time in your day or week which you can use to prompt you to pray for something or someone? I know it’ll make a difference both to the situation you’re praying for and to you too.
