Leeds School of Theology is an informal school offering theological education which brings academic theology and missional practice together. The Leeds School of Theology is open to all and is an exciting opportunity for anyone wanting to gain a greater knowledge of God, Scripture and theology. Our courses will equip, empower and inspire you to think theologically and to read, study and apply God’s Word in a deeper and life transforming way.

Our Nightschool offers a one-year course in ‘Foundations in Christian Theology’. This course runs from September to July over 20 Monday evening sessions. It follows the academic calendar with breaks for Half Terms, Christmas and Easter. Attending every session is a priority for our students. However, if you cannot make a session, they are all recorded so that you can catch up online.

We look at topics including: An introduction to Theology and Scripture, a Healthy Hermeneutic approach so we can read the bible well, the Doctrine of the Church- Ecclesiology, Old Testament Survey, New Testament Survey, Church History, First Century Culture and the Early Church, Genesis and Creation, Doctrine of the Spirit- Pneumatology, Doctrine of Jesus Christ- Christology, Trinitarian Theology, Sovereignty and Freedom, Kingdom and Covenant

What does a session look like?
Each session begins at 7:15am with refreshments prayer and finishes at 9:30pm. The sessions are structured around a mix of teaching, Q&A, small group discussion and practising the various theological and hermeneutical tools we learn.

Is there any homework or assessments?
Throughout the month we participate in an online discussion forum, where we can continue to process the content we’re learning and hear from one another.
There are assignments set for each session, including learning a glossary of theological vocabulary, writing a brief theological reflection, and working with the core biblical texts we’re studying. While these assignments are technically optional, they help to solidify learning and enable to students to work through what they believe about various theological topics.

All sessions are held in the St George’s Centre in Leeds City Centre, 60 Great George Street, LS1 3DL. There is parking available in Joseph’s Well car Park (LS3 1AB), across the pedestrian footbridge on the other side of the A58. The venue is also close to both bus and train connections.

The cost of the course is £370 per year, which includes all teaching, electronic resources and refreshments. If students would like a printed course pack, including all the handouts and resources, this costs an additional £30 per year, and can be selected during online registration.

Some local churches are able to subsidise the cost of the Leeds School of Theology for their students. If your church has not advertised a subsidy, please contact your church leaders to enquire about this possibility.
