Street Angels - New Project launching in Leeds

Dear AllBethTash

Street Angels Leeds will be launching on Friday 27th January 2012 - and this is your invite to be part of it!

The initial training will be the week before on Thursday 19th January and we'd love as many people as possible to come along, even if you can't make the 27th.

  • If you are a church leader please forward this to the appropriate contact in your congregation (men's ministries & Over 50s especially welcome)
  • If you create your church's newsletter/email please add the notice at the bottom of this email into it
  • And if you're at all interested in being part of this please drop me an email. If I don't hear from you I won't fill up your inbox again!

As many of you will be aware, Street Chaplains was started in Leeds over 4 years ago by Rev Adrian Burdon at Oxford Place Methodist Church. After they took a short break, we will be re-starting this great work as Street Angels!

The actual work of a Street Angel is mainly very simple; picking up glass bottles, pointing people in the direction of taxis or venues, giving out water and flip flops if needed, talking with and listening to people who have become distressed or lost friends on a night out - and I've found that just through being out and about and being willing to love the person in front of you, the most incredible conversations about God, life and faith have started.

Street Angels will always work in teams, will wear a Hi-Vis jackets (provided), and will be connected to the city's radio system that links venues and police. The police think very highly of this work, and in Halifax where this initiative started, the police attribute the huge reduction in crime to the work of the Street Angels.

Volunteers can be of any age group - but other groups have found that the 40+ age group are particularly good and committed members of Street Angel groups - bringing with them a wisdom, common sense approach and caring attitude. (But please feel free to advertise to whoever!) - There's a Street Angel in Ripon who is 90 years old - so no excuses!

Please read the notice below for details about the training and launch, and any other questions do please get in touch,

Many Thanks

Street Angels is a national initiative which seeks to provide 'Safe people and a Safe place' in cities between the hours of 9pm & 3am. It is a fantastic way to engage positively in the nightlife of our city through providing support to those who need it, building relationships with police and night-time staff, and being out and about to pray for the city and speak about the goodness and love of God. The training for Leeds Street Angels will take place on Thursday 19th January at Holy Trinity Church, Boar Lane at 7.30pm and we will start on the streets on Friday 27th Jan at 9.30pm from the same venue. For any further information, and to let us know you're coming, please contact bethtash@gmail.com, many thanks
